Bowen Therapy – Illustrative Supporting Studies
Fibromyalgia, American College of Rheumatology
In a study of twenty clients diagnosed with fibromyalgia conducted by Jo Anne Whitaker, M.D., at the American College of Rheumatology, almost all participants experienced various degrees of relief which lasted from a few days to several weeks. Bowen therapy maintained complete clinical remission. The results were statistically significant and correlated with improvement of clinical well-being.
Pain Relief, University of North Carolina
A study at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill compared practitioner and client responses on the efficacy of the Bowen Technique in treating pain. Practitioners rated its effectiveness as 85% for back pain, 88% for neck pain, 83% for stress and tension and 80% for fibromyalgia. Clients rated the Bowen Technique at 85% for back pain, 80% for stress and tension, 95% for TMJ, 80% for hip pain and 75% for other conditions.
Bowen Therapy in Diabetes
This research study looks at structural integration and improvements in sensory perception associated with peripheral neuropathy a problem with diabetes. The article refers to Rolfing. Bowen Therapy is also a powerful structural integration modality but more gentle than rolfing. more
Bowen Therapy in Scoliosis
This study looks at the benefits of myofascial release in idiopathic scoliosis and the reduction in associated lower back pain. more
Bowen Therapy in Frozen Shoulder
This study is very long and detailed and unfortunately the diagrams have been lost. The study shows that all subjects found the Bowen a gentle and relaxing treatment and experienced complete or significant relief from pain and regained their mobility. more
Beneficial Psychophysiological Effects of Bowen Therapy
This study is again quite lengthy and detailed. It shows the remarkable improvement in psychological states for Bowen Therapy enhancing positive moods and reducing feelings of tension, anxiety, fatigue, anger, depression and confusion. more
Bowen Therapy in Patella Tendinopathy Knee Pain

Bowen Therapy in Hamstring Strains
Hamstring strain is the most common lower limb sports related injury. This study shows that one treament significantly increases hamstring flexibility. more
Bowen Therapy in Cervical Neck Pain and Range of Movement
This study shows how Rolfing that has similarities to Bowen Therapy as a structural integration technique, but is not as gentle, is effective in reducing neck pain and increasing the cervical range of movement. more
Bowen Therapy can stimulate electrical activity and self organising mechanisms
This study illustrates how myofascial therapy stimulates electrical activity and hypothesises that this in turn stimulates physiological self-organising mechanisms associated with body balance and homeostatis. more
Bowen Therapy in Stress Related Vasocontriction
This study shows how fascial therapy, in this case associated with pulsology, can have a beneficial effect on hypertension and the vascular endothelium. more
